SEMINOLE - Tuesday's Seminole-Countryside girls soccer matchup looked like it would be a defensive battle. For about 10 minutes, that is.
Seminole striker Taylor Mattox scored 12 minutes into the game and added another goal just before halftime to lead the Warhawks over the Cougars, 3-0. Senior co-captain Amy Nolsheim scored and junior goalkeeper Amanda Tucker had eight saves for Seminole in the opener for both teams.
"We really moved the ball well and had good chemistry right from the start," said Mattox, one of eight returning starters for the Warhawks.
At the 12:18 mark, Mattox gathered a loose ball about 10 yards outside the penalty box and found herself one-on-one with Countryside keeper Kelly Nimmo. The sophomore striker rifled a shot past Nimmo to put the Warhawks up 1-0.
A few minutes later, junior midfielder Elora Weaver handled a free kick 30 yards from the goal, dribbled in and shot from just inside the box. Nimmo punched the ball away but Nolsheim was there for an easy putback.
Mattox scored again with about 10 minutes left in the half on a beautifully placed free kick just outside the 18-yard box for the final score.
Defenders Regan Riley, Leah Hatfield and Kelsey Rhodes took care of the rest as they helped Tucker record a shutout.
