A wild chase through Citrus county ended Saturday night when a stolen car rolled over StopSticks, blowing a tire. The speeding car smashed into a tree off U.S. 19, killing the driver.

A Citrus County deputy spotted a stolen car Saturday night, called it in and began a pursuit.

The lengthy chase involving three Citrus County squad cars and others from Hernando County, as the pursuit crisscrossed county lines twice, said Ronda Hemminger Evan, spokeswoman for the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.

Hemminger Evan said the deputy was traveling south on U.S. 19 around 6:20 p.m. when he recognized a car that matched an alert for a stolen car. He called in to check on its status, and was joined by two other deputies. As the deputy put on his siren, the driver raced off toward Hernando County.

The car had been reported stolen from a convenience store at U.S. 19 and Yulee Drive, she said.

After a chase that wove back and forth across the county line, Citrus officers threw the StopSticks, Hemminger Evan said.

Officers were still trying late Saturday to identify the driver, she said.
