Tampa Bay Tech names building for fallen grad

TAMPA - When Paul Smith graduated from Tampa Bay Technical High School in 1989, no one could have known what a hero he would become.

Today at 11 a.m. he will be the center of attention as the high school dedicates its JROTC building in Smith's memory.

Smith, who died April 4, 2003, during battle in Iraq, was awarded the Medal of Honor this year.

Hillsborough schools spokeswoman Linda Cobbe said Smith was a natural for the honor. There were no other names on the table.

"They didn't have any other graduate from that school who had earned anything close to the Medal of Honor," she said.

A granite memorial has been donated to the school. It will be placed in the school's new Veteran's garden.
