MISSOURI QB SETS TWO MARKS
Missouri's Brad Smith became the NCAA's all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks and the first to throw for 8,000 yards and rush for 4,000 during a 41-12 loss at Colorado. Smith entered with 3,891 yards rushing and 7,891 passing. Two 4-yard runs surpassed Indiana's Antwaan Randle-El's record from 1998-2001, and Smith completed 12 of his first 13 passes, including a 5-yarder to Chase Coffman that gave him 8,002 yards. The senior finished with 16 rushing yards (3,907 total) and 160 passing (8,051).
PATH TO PERFECTION
The remaining schedules for the three unbeaten I-A teams:
ALABAMA: vs. LSU (Saturday); at Auburn (Nov.19); SEC title game (Dec.3).
SOUTHERN CAL: at Cal (Saturday); vs. Fresno State (Nov.19); vs. UCLA (Dec.3).
TEXAS: vs. Kansas (Saturday); at Texas A&M (Nov.25); Big 12 title game (Dec.3).
BOWL PROJECTION
Our best guess at the BCS and Tampa's Outback Bowl:
ROSE: Southern Cal (BCS No.1) vs. Texas (BCS No.2)
ORANGE: Miami (ACC) vs. Penn State (Big Ten)
SUGAR: Georgia (SEC) vs. West Virginia (Big East)
FIESTA: Notre Dame (at-large) vs. LSU (at-large)
OUTBACK: Florida (SEC) vs. Ohio State (Big Ten)
OBSCURE GAMES OF THE DAY
ILLINOIS ST. 48, MISSOURI ST. 23: Pierre Rembert rushed for 272 yards and six touchdowns for the visiting Redbirds. He scored on runs of 6, 2, 2, 51, 22 and 6 yards.
ALCORN ST. 38, MISS. VALLEY ST. 36: Charlie Spiller returned two kickoffs 100 yards for touchdowns, and Michael Shepherd's 23-yard run with 1:55 left won it for the visiting Braves.
MOREHEAD ST. 56, MISSOURI-ROLLA 55: The visiting Eagles rallied from a 32-point deficit. Down 35-3 in the second quarter, Morehead State took a 53-49 lead on a 7-yard pass from Brian Yost to Eli Parkes and added a 47-yard field goal by Adam Jones with 1:57 left. Rolla responded with Ashton Gronewold's 1-yard touchdown catch with eight seconds left, but Duane Tigney sacked Evan Gray on the two-point conversion.
PLAYERS OF THE DAY
ALBERT YOUNG, IOWA: The sophomore rushed for 202 yards, his fifth consecutive 100-yard game, and two touchdowns in a 28-27 loss to Northwestern.
JESSE HOLLEY, NORTH CAROLINA: The junior caught eight passes for 125 yards (three for 57 in the fourth) in a 16-14 win over Boston College.
SAM HURD, NORTHERN ILLINOIS: The senior caught 12 passes for 266 yards and touchdowns of 27, 5 and 79 yards in a 31-28 win over Central Michigan.
BRIAN JOHNSON, UTAH: The sophomore was 32-for-45 for 384 yards and four touchdowns and ran for a 3-yard touchdown in a 43-13 win over Wyoming.
TAMBA HALI, PENN STATE: The senior had four of the Nittany Lions' nine sacks in a 35-14 win over Wisconsin.
TOM ZBIKOWSKI, NOTRE DAME: The junior returned an interception and punt for touchdowns in a 41-21 win over Tennessee.
MINICONFERENCE OF THE DAY
COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF'S: Carlton Jones ran for 146 yards and a touchdown to lead visiting Army past Air Force 27-24. As a result, Army's game against Navy (which beat Air Force 27-24 on Oct.8) in Philadelphia on Dec.3 will be for the trophy awarded to the team with the best record in games between the three major service academies. It marks only the fourth time Air Force was swept since the competition began in 1972.
NUMBERS OF THE DAY
3: Consecutive seasons Northwestern has won at least six games, the first time since going 6-3, 7-1 and 7-1-1 from 1929-31. The Wildcats went 6-7 in 2003 and 6-6 last season.
1968: The last time Kansas had beaten Nebraska before Saturday's 40-15 win, which ended a 36-game losing streak. Notre Dame holds the active record for consecutive wins in an uninterrupted series, 41 in a row against Navy.
QUOTE OF THE DAY
"I know this doesn't make me very popular in Memorial Stadium right now." - Kansas public address announcer Hank Booth asking fans to not storm the field; he was ignored.
