Talk of the bay

Caffeine cravers settle for smaller

By HELEN HUNTLEY
Published November 7, 2005

A mysterious cup crisis was brewing at some Starbucks stores in the Tampa Bay area last week.

Customers dropping by for a caffeine fix were told that the stores were out of the extra-large "venti" cups. They were (horrors!) forced to settle for the smaller "grande," although some took the two-fisted approach, walking out with two "talls."

What was behind the coffee cup crunch?

Starbucks' cup supplier claims it wasn't to blame.

"We keep an ample supply of everything, and we deliver five days a week," said Michael Lewchenko, Tampa Bay sales manager for DadePaper Co.

Starbucks did not respond to a call for comment. But a lesson in supply management has been learned. Ventis or not, Starbucks customers will not be turned away.
