Ohio going bananas to keep Chiquita from Florida

By ROBERT TRIGAUX
Published November 7, 2005

Florida might seem a more logical place to operate a company big on bananas. But Ohio begs to differ.

Chiquita Brands International Inc., long headquartered in Cincinnati, is considering a move to Miami. The company is drawn by the proximity to Central America and by incentives from the state's economic development agency, Enterprise Florida.

Not so fast. Ohio leaders are trying to assemble a $30-million package to keep Chiquita right where it is: in downtown Cincinnati.

Chiquita seems unimpressed by Ohio's incentives or Hurricane Wilma - good news for weather-beaten Miami.

As Chiquita spokesman Michael Mitchell told the Miami Herald: "To the extent that there are hurricanes in South Florida, that will be considered as part of the equation in terms of cost and quality of life for our employees."
