  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Site Seeing

Feel free to browse

Naturally ours

www.VirtualParks.org/html/gallery.html

The more I see of North America's national parks, the more stunning Irealize parts of this country are. This short but sumptuous photo gallery takes you, 25 shots at a time, through our most precious of resources. I'm blown away by Sequoia, almost to the point of contemplating leaving the city to take a peek.

Trial run

Have you ever wanted to give Linux a spin but didn't want to endure problems of disk partitioning? Then this free service might be for you. It's an online version of the operating system that you use from afar. You download the software and, after registering, off you go. There's no privacy policy on the site, so I'd be wary of the information you create until one appears. But it could be the perfect test vehicle to see if Linux might be for you.

Better weather

www.weatherbonk.com/weather/

I keep promising myself that I'll stop looking for ever niftier applications of Google's mapping product than ones I've already seen. But it doesn't seem to be working out. This example marries Google's visuals with weather data. It makes for a very big picture of what's hot and what's not. Remarkablybookmarkable.

Browser makeover

http://JohnHaller.com/jh/mozilla/firefox_internet_explorer/

Here's an interesting concept: Change the look of FireFox on your Windows computer so it looks almost like Internet Explorer. It'scommon knowledge that not using IE is a great way to help keep viruses off a computer. But all it takes is a sloppy browsingsession from a friend in need and all your vigilance goes out thewindow. So, with a little work, it's possible to fool the easilyfooled. It's nerdy but a good read.

Bored?

www.UniqueProjects.com/

Got a bunch of spare time? Then head over tothis site if you're even remotely crafty. You can download oodles of plans to make things such as wine racks, bulletin boards, and even kids' toys. My favorites are the wine rack No. 2 and the mini zen garden. The plans are free; materials are on your tab.
