Man accused of shooting fiancee's ex-husband

VALRICO - A dispute over a child's bicycle escalated late Sunday, landing one man in a hospital and another in jail.

David Jonathan Heckman, 61, fired several shots at the ground outside his home at 3802 Castle Key Lane before hitting his fiancee's ex-husband, Robert Carroll, in the leg, Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.

Carroll arrived at Heckman's house before midnight with a new bike for his 14-year-old son, who resides at Heckman's residence with his mother, Carroll's ex-wife.

Carter said Heckman wouldn't allow Carroll into the home to see his son and an argument escalated.

Carroll picked up a stick, hit Heckman's car and knocked over trash cans. Heckman went into the home to retrieve a handgun and began firing.

Carroll ran to a neighbor's home and a neighbor called for emergency officials.

Heckman was charged with attempted second-degree murder shortly after midnight. He is being held without bail.

Carroll was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Carter said.
