Naughton chooses Webber

DADE CITY - Ashley Naughton's father, John, supported her interest in volleyball. He paid for camps and shoes and took pride in her accomplishments, right up until his death from cancer in July 2004.

Naughton's father will be in her thoughts Wednesday, when she finally realizes her dream of playing in college.

The Pasco senior leftside hitter will sign with Webber International, an NAIA program.

"It was a big part of him to know I was really into volleyball," Naughton said.

Naughton, a four-year starter, has been Pasco's most consistent hitter the past three seasons and the Pirates' first real power hitter since Lauren Dillard graduated after the 2001 season, coach Ramiro Tejada said.

Naughton received all-Sunshine Athletic Conference honorable mention as a junior and improved her passing and back row play this season.

Her eagerness to learn caught the attention of Webber International coach Tim Edfors, her coach at the Florida Southern camp this past summer. The two began exchanging e-mails, and Naughton recently attended a tryout at the Babson Park school.

"I'm really eager," Naughton said. "I'm just ready to graduate and go off to college and play some more."
