Baker easily wins re-election

It was the best showing in a mayoral election since at least 1989.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker won an easy victory over challenger Ed Helm tonight, a blow-out that indicated overwhelming support for his first term in office.

Baker, 49, won 70 percent of the vote, besting Helm by a margin of 13,203 votes. It was the best showing in a mayoral election since at least 1989.

"The voters proclaimed St. Petersburg is a city united today," said Baker.

In a dramatic finish to the closest watched, hardest fought City Council races in recent history, Earnest Williams defeated challenger Darden Rice Tuesday, while a fellow incumbent was removed from office in a blowout.

Virginia Littrell's loss to Leslie Curran ended her four-year residency at City Hall, while John Bryan earned another term by defeating lawyer Eve Joy. In the fourth contest between two newcomers, Jeff Danner beat Jamie Mayo.
