Girl shot in face walks; fund open for expenses

ST. PETERSBURG - Javonna Jackson, the 15-year-old girl shot in the face Oct. 19, has been able to get out of bed and walk, her mother said Monday.

Trina Graham said her daughter is expected to start an extensive rehabilitation process soon.

Meanwhile, Javonna's brother, Delvin Mays, has started a fund to help the family defray expenses. Graham has health insurance but has taken leave from her Raytheon job to be with Javonna and is not being paid for the time away.

Mays sponsored a carwash that raised $192 to help Graham with household bills. Another carwash is planned.

The Javonna S. Jackson Fund has been established at Bank of America, Graham said. Contributions designated for the fund can be mailed or taken to any branch of the bank.

A 9mm pistol bullet struck Javonna in the face on Oct. 19 as she talked to a friend who was holding the gun. Police said the shooting was accidental and charged Ivery Sturgis, 18, with being a delinquent felon in possession of a firearm.

The bullet went through Javonna's nose and down her throat, knocking out a dozen teeth and sending splinters into her spine.

A court hearing is Thursday to consider a motion to declare Sturgis indigent.
