Life lost

By Times Staff Writer
Published November 10, 2005

The creators of ABC's hit serial Lost lived up to their promises Wednesday, killing off a main character and revealing new plot points.

In the first episode of the November "sweeps" ratings period, focusing on rich-girl-gone-bad Shannon (Maggie Grace), writers killed her off after a promising "close-encounter" with love interest Sayid (Naveen Andrews). Shannon's end came in a friendly fire incident as she was shot in the chest by Ana Lucia (Michelle Rodriguez) during a chance encounter in the jungle.

In an Internet podcast Tuesday, co-creator Damon Lindelof and co-producer Carlton Cuse swore teasers hinting one of the castaways would die Wednesday were not a cheap ploy. As painful as it is to lose a primary character, they said, sometimes it's necessary for plot development.

Follow up on Wednesday's stunner with Times' TV Critic Chase Squires' nearly-famous stick figure Lost recaplet, online by noon today at his blog www.sptimes.com/blogs/tv
