Driver ejects from ATV after chase with officer

By Times Staff Writer

SEFFNER - When an all-terrain vehicle driver ran through a stop sign and almost crashed into a Hillsborough sheriff's sergeant Tuesday evening, the deputy activated his lights and attempted a traffic stop. Instead, a chase ensued, and ended when the deputy crashed into the ATV, ejecting the driver, officials said.

Sgt. Mike Simpkins followed ATV driver Donald Tracy Stetzel, 30, when he fled the intersection of Taylor and Pruett Roads, into and out of an orange grove, and into a mobile home park on Taylor and Skewlee Roads, deputies said.

Stetzel crashed into a bush when he attempted to maneuver a turn around a semitrailer truck, and when Simpkins followed, his car struck the ATV's front tire, ejecting Stetzel.

Stetzel, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center where he remains, with nonlife-threatening injuries. No charges have yet been filed, but the investigation is continuing.
