Boca Raton Marine killed in Iraq

Associated Press
Published November 10, 2005

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A Marine from Boca Raton was killed Sunday in Husaybah, an Iraqi town on the Syrian border where troops were fighting Al Qaida-led insurgents.

The Defense Department said Lance Cpl. Ryan J. Sorensen, 26, died from small arms fire. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

"Ryan wanted to be an officer but wanted to do some tours as an enlisted infantryman first," Sorensen's father Jim said. "He told me, "I can't lead people in that environment unless I've been in that environment.' "

He said the family was surprised when his son joined the Marines last year. He had studied at Wyoming Technical Institute, where he learned to build race cars and was certified as an auto mechanic.
