Top five movies and upcoming releases

A look at what's going on in the theaters

By STEVE PERSALL
Published November 10, 2005

Current movies recommended by the Times:

1. Capote - Philip Seymour Hoffman is a shoo-in for an Oscar nomination, playing author Truman Capote as he researches and writes In Cold Blood.

2. Good Night, and Good Luck - CBS newsman Edward R. Murrow (David Strathairn) challenges the communist hunting practices of Sen. Joseph McCarthy in George Clooney's gorgeous, thoughtful film.

3. North Country - Academy Award winners Charlize Theron, Sissy Spacek and Frances McDormand help make this fact-based tale of sexual harassment memorable.

4. Everything Is Illuminated - A compulsive collector (Elijah Wood) travels to eastern Europe to locate the woman who saved his grandfather during the Holocaust. Directed with uncommon assurance by first-timer Liev Schreiber.

5. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang - An actor-thief (Robert Downey Jr.) and a gay private eye (Val Kilmer) plunge into a sexy, violent mystery in Shane Black's sendup of action movies cliches.
