PALM HARBOR - A bicycle crash on the Pinellas Trail on Thursday evening sent two riders to the hospital, one with critical injuries.
A group of about 16 riders were pedaling north on the trail south of Wall Springs Park at about 6:30 p.m. when one of the riders went over his handle bars and struck his head on the pavement, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office. A rider close behind ran into the downed bike and also fell to the ground.
Terry Joyce, 69, of Dunedin, was flown via helicopter to Bayfront Medical Center in St. Petersburg with what sheriff's deputies said were critical injuries. The trailing rider, Mitch A. Scott, 47, of Palm Harbor, was taken to Helen Ellis Memorial Hospital in Tarpon Springs with non-life threatening injuries, deputies reported.
The group of riders was moving at about 18 mph. Both of the injured riders were wearing helmets.
