TAMPA - Senior center Solomon Jones had 19 points and 18 rebounds to lead South Florida to a 94-62 preseason win against Saint Leo at the Sun Dome on Thursday night.
"I can't say enough about Solomon Jones," coach Robert McCullum said. "He's so improved. Rarely does he not go to the boards, on both ends. He's been great. Overall, (rebounding) is still the biggest concern I have about the group."
Senior guard James Holmes led all scorers with 23 points, and junior McHugh Mattis had 17 points and four blocks.
Freshman guard Michael Caulfield led Saint Leo with 19 points. The Bulls open Nov. 18 at home against Alcorn State.
FSU: Point guard Josue Soto of Jacksonville signed with the men's team. ... Jacinta Monroe, a 6-4 forward/center from Fort Lauderdale Stranahan, and Alysha Harvin, a 5-10 guard from South Broward High, signed with the women's team. Both are ranked among the state's top prep players.
USF WOMEN: Coach Jose Fernandez announced a six-player recruiting class, including a junior college guard who could join the team next month.
The class is ranked No. 17 in the nation, according to the Blue Star Report recruiting service. The recruits should bring considerable size, led by 6-foot-5 center Stephanie Sarosi of Titusville, 6-4 center Ashley McCray of Sanford and 6-3 forward Melissa Dalembert of Miramar. Forward Caitlyn Mitryk, a 6-footer from Lake Mary, and 6-foot forward Porche Grant of Oxon Hills, Md., round out the freshmen.
The latest addition is 5-foot-9 junior guard Daiane Packer, who played at Trinity Valley Community College. She did not meet Fordham academic requirements. Fernandez is undecided whether she will join the team next month or next fall. Bulls senior guard Tristen Webb will miss the season with a knee injury. She would be eligible for a medical redshirt.
