  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

A game request and an offer for quilters

By LINDA D. COLE and INGRID L. KOHLER
Published November 12, 2005

A friend of Gloria Brill recently purchased the game Wordkub at a flea market. Gloria writes that it is played like Rummikub, except letters, not numbers, are used. It must be fun to play; Gloria liked it so much that she called the manufacturer to learn where the game could be purchased, only to learn it is no longer produced. Got Wordkub gathering dust in your closet? Call (727) 345-7920.

Fran Hutchinson of Spring Hill, while sorting through the things her mother left after her death, discovered a quilt top tucked away in a closet. Fran doesn't know the pattern's name, but the top appears to be a double size, and she would love to give it to a quilting club or an individual quilter. Fran also has the materials for a Christmas quilt that she'd like to give to someone who can use them.

Recipients will have to pick up the items, unless they live in Fran's vicinity, in which case she can drop them off. Please call (352) 683-9242.

"Please accept one more plea for an 8mm movie projector," Linda Baker asks. Far be it from REX to raise impediments to uniting projectors and the people who need them! And the Bakers definitely fall under that description. When they recently moved, they unearthed cherished movie films that are 35 years old and had been mourned as missing.

Overjoyed as they are at the return of the prodigals, they now have no projector with which to view them. They want to make sure the films are undamaged before they are transferred to DVD. Please call (352) 422-3522.

D. Dixie Davis of Beverly Hills is trying to assemble a collection of Reader's Digest music books. A friend gave her one titled Best Loved Songs, and it worked out well for our reader, who has had several strokes and can no longer play more complicated music. Please e-mail dddgems@shadrach.net or call 352 527-1268; a pickup can be arranged.

Mary Evans of Zephyrhills needs a seat-belt extender for a 1974 Ford Maverick. If you have one, please call her at (813) 780-2460.

DOUBLE INSTRUCTIONS ALERT! Anna Brooks of New Port Richey has not one but TWO sewing machines that are missing their instruction manuals. One is a Brother VX-1120, the other a Morse JA61, 735121. Please call (727) 815-0108 if you can help.

A reader in the Largo area is in dire need of instructions for crocheting a shell design afghan. Please call (727) 586-6883 if you can help.

Largo's Becky Mann has a motorized hospital bed that is looking for a new home. The good news: It works very well. The bad news: You'll have to haul it away, and it is heavy. Please call either (727) 403-5335 or (352) 245-3112.

Doris Petersen of South Pasadena wants to donate some beautiful post cards of spots in the United States and countries abroad; she will include professional camera shots of Belgium and the Netherlands. Interested folks, call (727) 360-5922.

Doris Gehring of Dunedin needs six to eight individual glass Imperial Crab baking dishes; if you don't have any you are trying to unload, perhaps you can suggest where Doris can find them for sale. Please call (727) 736-6962.

Sherry Mintz of Spring Hill wishes to donate two rather large pieces of fake fur - one brown, one black - and two large bags full of decorator and upholstery fabric samples to an organization or individual who can use them for a good cause. Please call Sherry at 352 666-0060 or e-mail countryworks@countryprimitives.org to arrange for pickup.

Noel Hedrick, who would love to have that dehydrator you no longer use, offers an undercounter 8/10 cup coffee maker and an unopened toner for Panasonic KX-P4410, 4430 laser printers.

Noel has noted the frequent requests for instruction manuals, so he anticipates reader needs by putting up for grabs a user's guide for an HP Desk Jet 820Cxi/820Cse printer and operating instructions for a KK-P4410 laser printer. Noel may be reached at (727) 786-6650 or (727) 787-7465.

Joyce Stetsky of Seminole is one of the intrepid crocheters among our readers who makes shawls and lap robes for elderly nursing home residents. She needs to replenish her stock of washable, four-ply yarn, so here's an excellent use for leftovers from a project. Give Joyce a call at (727) 393-6050.

Kathy Dirosa is getting ready for the Clearwater Audubon garage sale. She primarily needs a 16-inch front wheel for a girls bike, but other clean, usable items for the sale are welcome. Please call (727) 518-9828.

- Send requests to Reader Exchange, Floridian, St. Petersburg Times, P.O. Box 1121, St. Petersburg 33731 or e-mail cole@sptimes.com Requests will be accepted only by mail or e-mail.
