When Spurrier became coach at Florida in 1990, the SEC was a smash-mouthed, run-oriented league. He changed all that with his Fun 'n' Gun offense.
Sixteen of the top 17 team season-scoring totals in the SEC came after 1989, with Spurrier's Gators holding five of the top six.
All of the top-10 passing yards for a season and passing yards per game totals came after 1992.
None of the top-10 rushing seasons or rushing yards per game came after 1985.
First team since NCAA began keeping statistics in 1937 to score more than 500 points in four consecutive seasons*:
1993: 513
1994: 538
1995: 558
1996: 611
*includes bowl games
"College offenses about this time were starting to change across the country," former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "(Spurrier) brought that concept into the SEC. He was so innovative, all of his ideas and his daring calls offensively."
Information from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution was used in this report.
