JON GRUDEN QUOTEBOOK
On Simeon Rice's role:
He's a leader, he's a hell of a guy. He has more impact than a lot of people know because he likes to be perceived as a villain. But he's really a solid guy that we're going to need in the next seven weeks.
On the decision to go for a two-point conversion in the final minute:
If we're going down, we're going down with our best players. We have guys in our locker room that have world championship rings. We don't have as many as we used to, but we still have championship character. When the game is on the line, I believe the thing to do is put the game in their hands, and that's what we did today. I wouldn't have been able to wake up tomorrow night not knowing what we would have done with Mike Alstott. There are no guarantees what happens in overtime.
On quarterback Chris Simms:
It was a great step forward for Chris. He tied the game at 28. We're down by seven and he brings us back and puts the winning score for us on the scoreboard. Those are the games you dream of as a quarterback. His dad won many games like that, bringing those Giants from behind. This is a great start for Chris Simms, and it gives our football team a great lift. It's good to know as a football player that, if we can get the ball back to our quarterback, he can do something with it. He made a great statement today in front of a lot of people.
On Mike Alstott and his recently increased role in the offense:
I realize his role as a ball carrier has been reduced; that could change as the season unfolds, we'll see. He's a premier pro football player, one that I'm proud to be associated with, and we're going to try to get a lot more out of him the next seven weeks.
JOE GIBBS' TAKE
The Redskins coach, on whether Mike Alstott made it into the end zone on the 2-point conversion:
Anytime you lose, it's tough. There are always 50 plays where you could have won and 50 plays where you could have lost. All of our guys thought he was on the ground. That's what everybody told me. I didn't see it, but that's what instant replay is for.
