Floridians have debt under control, or so they say

By HELEN HUNTLEY
Published November 14, 2005

Debt problems? Not us. Floridians are more likely than residents of other states to say they've got things under control. That's what MasterCard says it found out from a September telephone survey conducted by Opinion Research Corp.

Half the Floridians surveyed gave themselves a perfect 10 ("the best possible job") in debt management skills, compared with a third of those surveyed nationwide. Only 10 percent of Floridians have ever sought professional advice about paying off debts, compared with 16 percent nationally.

Men were more likely than women to claim that they knew the exact amount of their debt down to the penny. (They must not use their credit cards.)
