Sandwich shop has a side of history

Foodies big on authenticity may want to try the new Earl of Sandwich restaurant that opens at International Plaza in Tampa in January.

One partner really is a Sandwich: John Montagu, the 11th earl of Sandwich. The first earl is credited with inventing the sandwich in 1762.

But it's another partner named Earl (Robert Earl, the Orlando restaurateur who cofounded Hard Rock Cafe and Planet Hollywood) who is attracting industry attention. The first store did $6-million its first year at Walt Disney World.

"We think we can develop a national chain," said Gary Davis, CEO of Earl of Sandwich, which sold development rights for 16 stores in the Tampa Bay area.

The concept? Oversized sandwiches. The signature roast beef sandwich - top-round slow-roasted on site for 14 hours, piled on fresh-baked bread - goes for $4.95.
