Tampa firm denies link to San Diego airports controversy

A Tampa consulting firm has been tied to a controversy involving the director of San Diego's two general aviation airports.

The San Diego Union-Tribune reported last week that city officials were investigating 16 contracts worth $225,276 that embattled airports director Tracy Means "steered" to an acquaintance who works for Airport Business Solutions.

During the five years that the contracts worth $225,276 were awarded, the newspaper reported, the city's airports division didn't hire any other consultants.

Michael Hodges, president of Airport Business Solutions, said last week that the newspaper got its facts wrong. At least a dozen other companies got contracts from the airport division during the same five-year period, he said.

His firm was selected by the city's legal department for its initial contract to review a study on privatizing the airports, Hodges said, although the money came from the airports' budget.

"To create the impression that we were the only ones that did work at the airports over that last five years is ludicrous," he said.
