ST. PETERSBURG - A St. Petersburg man was arrested Sunday on a charge of first-degree homicide after shooting his uncle during an argument, St. Petersburg police said.

The victim, Cromartie Evans, 37, was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he died during surgery. His nephew, Shanley Batson, 21, was arrested and taken to the Pinellas County Jail.

The shooting took place about 5:16 a.m. outside an apartment where both men lived on the 970 block of 25th St. S. Batson accused Evans of stealing money from him, police said. When they returned to the apartment, Batson pulled a .25-caliber handgun and shot Evans once in the chest, police said. Evans left the apartment and collapsed in the street.

Batson fled on a bicycle, but returned about 45 minutes later to speak with officers.

Batson's mother, who is Evans' sister, lives at the apartment but was not home at the time of the shooting, police said.
