GAINESVILLE - A former associate dean at the University of Florida will serve five years of probation for defrauding the university of more than $120,500.
Timothy Van Susteren, 57, will spend two of those years on home confinement, U.S. District Judge Stephan Mickle ruled Monday. Van Susteren also must complete 300 hours of community service.
Investigators said Van Susteren asked vendors to mail checks to his home for fees charged to prepare seminars through the medical school. He pleaded guilty to wire fraud in June.
Pharmaceutical companies co-sponsored the programs, funded them with grants and negotiated with vendors to produce the seminars and supporting materials. The university charged an administrative fee.
Between February 2003 and July 2004, Van Susteren endorsed and deposited 11 checks made out to both him and the university into his personal bank account.
Officials at the University of Northern Florida say Van Susteren has been hired to teach there.
