Alabama, Memphis capture victories

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Chuck Davis had 19 points and nine rebounds to lift No. 15 Alabama to a season-opening 64-58 victory over Miami of Ohio on Tuesday night in the first round of the Preseason NIT. Miami cut it to 59-58 with 2:08 left with two free throws by Doug Penno to cap a 12-3 run but couldn't score again. Davis hit a long jumper and the RedHawks (0-1) were unable to get an open look at the basket in the closing minutes, missing their final four shots.

NO. 12 MEMPHIS 79, WISC.-MILW. 52: Freshman Shawne Williams and senior Rodney Carney scored 17 each to lead host Memphis in the Preseason NIT. Darius Washington added 16 points, and Kareem Cooper had 14 for the Tigers, who held the Panthers to 22-percent shooting and had 11 blocks. Wisconsin-Milwaukee closed to eight points, but Memphis answered with a 21-6 run to make it 63-40.

NO. 2 TEXAS 89, SOUTHERN 56: LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 11 rebounds and P.J. Tucker added 18 points in their return to the lineup, sending the host Longhorns to a win in the first round of the Guardians Classic.

NO. 20 IOWA 73, COLGATE 51: Greg Brunner scored 16 points and host Iowa survived a stretch of ragged play in the second half to beat Colgate in the second round of the Guardians Classic. Adam Haluska added 14 points and Jeff Horner 13 for the Hawkeyes (2-0).

SAINT LEO 84, WEBBER 78: Senior guard Scott Seifert scored 22 points and freshman guard Michael Caulfield added 21 points as the host Lions defeating Webber International. Saint Leo raced to a 22-2 lead 4:20 into the game and 48-28 at halftime, shooting 47.6 percent from the 3-point line.

ECKERD 77, PUERTO RICO-CAYEY 52: The host Tritons started their season off with a win at the McArthur Center. Junior transfer Andre King-Holland scored 14 points, had five rebounds, and led all Tritons with eight assists and three steals on the night.

UCONN: Guard A.J. Price was granted a special form of probation Tuesday for his role in the theft of laptop computers from dorm rooms.

EX-COACH FILES SUIT: Former Miami coach Ferne Labati filed a lawsuit Tuesday alleging that age and gender discrimination contributed to her dismissal in March. Labati, 60, seeks punitive damages and reinstatement in the suit filed in circuit court in Miami-Dade County. Her successor is former Charlotte coach Katie Meier, who was 37 when hired in April. Athletic director Paul Dee said he hadn't seen Labati's complaint. Labati went 303-195 in 17 seasons at Miami and reached the NCAA tournament six times. She was fired 11 months after being inducted into the school's Sports Hall of Fame.

ECKERD 105, PUERTO RICO-CAYEY 38: The Tritons put on a scoring clinic at home. Freshman forward Gabby Gattuso posted game highs in points (18) and rebounds (14). Junior guard K.C. Gavin finished with 16 oints.
