  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

High school football playoffs

By Times Staff Writer
Published November 18, 2005

A preview of Friday's high school football playoff games:

CLASS 4A, REGION III semifinals

PLANT (9-2) at ARMWOOD (10-1)

Last Week: Plant defeated Bradenton Bayshore 14-7; Armwood crushed Middleton 44-7.

The Skinny: Plant came up big late in its first playoff game in six years, scoring twice in the last 31/2 minutes to win by seven. Plant's trio of quarterback Robert Marve, running back Kenny Allen and wide receiver Dylan Brown all played well in the Panthers' first postseason win since 1980.

For Armwood, meanwhile, it was business as usual. The Hawks ran for 319 yards as a team and scored on six of nine possessions. And that doesn't include the touchdown Armwood scored on defense. Armwood hasn't lost a playoff game in three years, going 11-0 since then.

The Edge: Plant needed 45 minutes to put points on the board last week. That doesn't bode well against a team that averages 38 points a game. Armwood moves on.

CLASS 6A, REGION II semifinals

PALM BEACH LAKES (8-2) at RIVERVIEW (10-1)

Last Week: Palm Beach Lakes defeated Royal Palm Beach 33-7; Riverview defeated Orlando Freedom 34-15.

The Skinny: Palm Beach Lakes is a defensive-minded squad led by outstanding senior safety Brandon Heath, who got six interceptions this season.

Senior running back Corddero Drummond leads the running attack while senior quarterback Angelo Bellamy doesn't throw a lot but is capable.

Riverview's defense is solid as well - the Sharks forced four turnovers in their playoff opener against Freedom. And its running tandem of Jahleel Addae and Antwain Powers has been almost unstoppable. The pair combined for 326 yards and four touchdowns a week ago.

The Edge: Riverview coach Dan O'Regan says his team is a combination of outstanding defense and a pair of unselfish runners on offense. That effective game plan is more than enough to lift the Sharks to the next round of the playoffs.
