You might be one of the people who complains about the inefficiency of government. If not, you undoubtedly know someone who does.
If you could do something about it, would you?
If your answer is yes, you should be aware of a meaningful opportunity to participate in how the Hernando County Commission spends your taxes.
At the urging of outgoing county Administrator Gary Adams, the commission is establishing the Citizens Advisory Committee on Growth Plans. When organized, its 25 members will be appointed to study options and make recommendations about construction and renovations for government offices. That task could be one of the most pressing, expensive and lasting the commission will undertake in the next 5 years.
As of Thursday afternoon, however, only 28 people had submitted an application to be appointed to the advisory committee. Kudos to those who have freely offered their time and energy for public service.
But it is disappointing that more residents, many with valuable expertise and experience in planning, finance, engineering, design and facility management, have shown no interest.
This situation is an exceptional occasion to become an active participant in your government. It is not for those who are indifferent or unwilling to make a commitment to their community. But it is ideal for those who wish to make a lasting contribution toward the goal of making government more responsive and convenient to the public.
The commission is accepting applications for the advisory committee until 5 p.m. Tuesday. If you're interested, the form can be obtained by downloading it from the county's Web site at www.co.hernando.fl.us/ or by calling the commission's administrative office at 754-4002.
