Education right is not about quality

Letters to the Editor
Published November 18, 2005

Re: Will we never learn real value of human life? Nov. 17 letter

While I agree with the letter writer's opinions regarding equal education being available to everyone regardless of one's wealth or standing in the community, I disagree with one point when the writer asserts that a quality education is a fundamental given right.

As one who has argued educational issues in the U.S. District Courts, I feel the writer shares a common misconception that many have regarding educational rights. The fact is that everyone is entitled to only a "fundamental education," period. Quality is not a guaranteed right and is instead determined by our community and those we hire and/or elect to represent us.

Separate insurance needed for sinkhole claims

I continue to read that sinkhole problems in Pasco County are one of the main reasons for rising insurance premiums. At the same time, I read that many sinkhole claims are made and paid off on damage that was actually caused by poor construction by builders.

If insurance policies were made for standard problems and a separate policy made for sinkholes, people could make a choice as to whether they want sinkhole insurance.

Using this method could lower insurance premiums for many homeowners.

Homeowners insurance increases take their toll

I have been with one insurance agency since moving to Florida in 1994, but I have been moved from one company to another. The annual premium on my homeowners insurance has increased from $504 in June 2003 to $2,218 this year. I am with Citizens. This last amount is 8 percent of my annual income. The news media is bombarding us with the announcement that Citizens is going to double its premium.

I am an average person. I have given prayers, clothing, money and time to the devastated people living with disaster. I am not immune to their suffering, but I must speak up for myself and others like me.

I am not being facetious when I say I will not have the luxury of eating cat food. I will be reduced to eating the cat if this upward spiral continues.

A close evaluation of my plight would be appreciated.

Daughter- deputy's acts make dad proud

I am one proud dad. I have a daughter, Susan Dumas, who is a deputy sheriff in Macomb County, Miss. She was on patrol last summer when she had a call that a 2-year-old boy had drowned in a swimming pool. Susan was the first one on the scene and gave the boy CPR and revived him.

Last month, Susan got another call that a 20-month-old had drowned in a fish pond. Susan and her partner were the first to arrive on the scene, and again she revived the little girl. At this time, both the children are doing fine.

Susan even teaches CPR at the jail.

Effort to rename street was not from city resident

In Molly Moorhead's article about the city of Zephyrhills changing street renaming procedures, she stated that "a resident sought to have a city street renamed" when in fact the person who did so was not a city resident.
