TAMPA - A Brandon teenager was in critical condition Friday after he was hit by two cars while attempting to cross the street on his bicycle near Clair Mel City.

Randall D. Ashworth, 13, an eighth-grader at Dowdell Middle Magnet School, rode his bike into traffic across 78th Street near Cadillac Circle near his home Friday morning, Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies reported.

Laura Ann Gross, driving north in a Ford Escort, tried to avoid him but struck him, deputies said. He was thrown off his bike and onto her car.

When she swerved into the southbound lane, she was hit head-on by Yolanda Perez, who was driving a Chevrolet Geo Prism. The crash threw Randall onto the ground.

Randall was transported to Tampa General Hospital by helicopter. Both drivers were taken to Brandon Community Hospital with injuries that weren't life-threatening, and no charges were filed.

Randall lives with his grandparents, Rita and Charles DuBose, who declined comment.
