For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
That's all that separated St. Petersburg Catholic from defeating Clewiston.
Trailing 28-21 in overtime, the Barons came back as Jock Sanders threw a halfback pass on fourth down to a wide-open Andrew Harris in the back of the end zone.
All SPC needed was the extra point to send it into another overtime.
But Barons coach Dan Mancuso decided to gamble after the Tigers were penalized for too many men on the field. Electing to go for two points and the win, Mancuso went with a jumbo backfield and gave the ball to bruising fullback C.J. Lee.
It didn't work.
Lee was stuffed just short of the goal line as Clewiston held on for a 28-27 victory.
"We wanted to end it there," Mancuso said. "We were close and figured we could make it. I guess one of our guards lost his footing and there was a pileup. C.J. still ran hard. We were just six inches short."
SPC stayed in the game thanks to its abundance of weapons.
The Barons offense is based on balance as they use multiple formations to attack defenses in a variety of ways.
Still, the Tigers were able to hold Sanders in check for most of the game and David Girardi had trouble throwing in a strong wind.
No problem. SPC just found other playmakers.
Andrew Harris came up big. Trailing 6-0 in the second quarter, Harris caught a pass from Girardi on third-and-14 and raced past three defenders for a 60-yard touchdown. Davis Rodriquez kicked the extra point to give the Barons a 7-6 lead at the half.
Clewiston took its opening possession of the second half and marched 78 yards on a drive capped by Richard Pope's 5-yard run. John Milton ran in the two-point conversion to put the Tigers ahead 14-7.
SPC countered by pulling out some razzle-dazzle. On fourth-and-5, Harris took a handoff, ran to his right, then reversed field for a 41-yard gain. That set up Lee's 3-yard touchdown run. Rodriquez missed the extra point.
Clewiston tried to put the game away on a time-consuming, 80-yard drive that ended on Nate Brinkley's 17-yard touchdown pass from Jared Combass. Milton kicked the extra point to make it 21-13.
Down to their last chance, the Barons again resorted to some trickery. Sanders threw a halfback option to Jermaine McKenzie for a 39-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with less than two minutes remaining. Lee caught a pass from Girardi for the two-point conversion.
That set up the overtime dramatics.
"It's tough because I wanted this for the county," Mancuso said. "Every time a team from our area comes down here, they think they're superior. They really aren't. We showed them tonight."
