NEW YORK - Federal prosecutors in the BALCO steroids trafficking case want an appeals court to grant them access to urine samples taken from 104 players in 2003, saying they need the samples as part of their ongoing investigation.
Last year, union officials successfully prevented the government from keeping the samples and the lists of players connected to them.
Tuesday, the U.S. Attorney's office and the MLB Players Association argued in an open hearing in San Francisco over whether the samples and records should remain at the labs where they are housed or be turned over to the government as it continues its BALCO investigation.
