Dinner and dancing at Polish-American club

HUDSON - The Polish-American Social Club will host a Thanksgiving Day dinner-dance Thursday at the clubhouse, 7615 New Jersey Ave. Doors will open at 12:15 p.m.

The entree choice will be turkey or ham steak. Dinner will be served from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and dancing to the music of the Music Blenders will be from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Tickets are $11 for members and $12 for nonmembers. Call Marcella at 597-5908.

Exotic animals to go on the auction block

BROOKSVILLE - A USA/FLA Exotic Animal and Bird Auction will be Saturday at the Hernando County Fairgrounds, 6436 S Broad St.

Gates will open at 8:30 a.m.; the auction will begin at 10 a.m. The auction is accepting consignments for exotic hooved stock, birds, reptiles, caged animals and other stock. Early check-in for consigners will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

Admission to the auction will be $5 per person. Reserved seats are available for $5. Payments for auction items must be made in cash or preapproved checks with bank letter.

Key Club goes distance to combat child abuse

SPRING HILL - The Key Club of Springstead High School will host a 5-mile walk to benefit Parents Against Abducted and Abused Signals from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 3 at the school's track, 3300 Mariner Blvd.

The "commitment fee" is $35 per walker; participants can pay with cash, check or money order made out to Springstead High School. Money raised will to go to PAAAS to aid in educating children how to silently ask for help.

Extension service offers courses on lawns, barrels

BROOKSVILLE - The Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service is taking registrations for the following programs:

--Rain barrel workshop, 9 a.m. Dec. 6. The cost of the workshop is $25, which includes a rain barrel to take home. After completion of the workshop, participants who are customers of Hernando County Utilities Department may be eligible for a $25 credit on their monthly account.

--Creating Your Florida-Friendly Yard, 10 a.m. Dec. 14. The program will show how to design and construct an attractive, durable landscape that requires a minimal amount of maintenance. The program is free.

Both programs will be at the extension service, 19490 Oliver St. Registration is required and will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. Call 754-4433.

Food assistance available on DCF Web site

Florida Department of Children and Families District 13, which includes Hernando County, now offers assistance on its Access Florida Web site at www.myflorida.com/accessflorida

Those seeking financial assistance and food stamps can now apply over the Internet. Anyone whose health or well-being is compromised by a temporary financial crisis or a continuing struggle to provide food for their families is encouraged to apply. For information, visit the Web site or call toll-free 1-866-762-2237.

Get your event on tourist department's calendar

The Hernando County Tourist Development Department creates a yearly and monthly calendar of events for all Hernando County activities open to the public.

Organizations interested in having events listed on the calendar should visit the Web site at www.hernandocounty.us/visit and click on "Submit Your Event." Download the form and return by e-mail or fax to Dawn Hogan at the tourism bureau, 30305 Cortez Blvd., Brooksville, or WelcomeCtr@co.hernando.fl.us or call her at 754-4405.

The calendars are distributed locally to the media and posted on the Web site. The deadline for posting events in the yearly calendar and the January calendar is Dec. 1. The deadline for all other monthly calendars is the first of each month prior to the event.

Festival Singers ring in the holidays with concerts

The Nature Coast Festival Singers will present the first of its three Christmas concerts at 3 p.m. Sunday at Nativity Lutheran Church, 6363 Commercial Way, Weeki Wachee.

Other concerts will be at 3 p.m. Dec. 4 at Spring Hill United Church of Christ, 4244 Mariner Blvd., Spring Hill, and at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at Christ Lutheran Church, 475 North Ave. W, Brooksville.

The concert will include choruses from Handel's Messiah and other Christmas songs. The group's director is Carol Ayer; the accompanist is Kathy Hackemer.

Just Us Duo to provide soundtrack at Elks' dinner

HUDSON - Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520 will host a steak dinner night at 6 p.m. Saturday at the lodge, 9135 Denton Ave. Dinner will include steak cooked to order, baked potato, salad, dessert and coffee. The Just Us Duo will provide music for dancing starting at 7 p.m.

A full program due for Christmas tree lighting

BROOKSVILLE - The annual lighting of the courthouse Christmas tree will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in front of the courthouse at 20 N Main St. The program will open with a tribute to military personnel, followed by holiday musical selections performed by local talent including Brian Chytka, Mikki Taylor, Paris and LaVerne Gunn, the Hernando Symphony Orchestra and students from John Leggio's Center for the Performing Arts. The program will close with the St. Anthony's Catholic Church hand bell choir.

Although the event will not be broadcast live this year on Bright House Channel 19, it will be taped and aired throughout the holiday season. For information, call 540-6780.

Woman's Club schedules festival, Tour of Homes

BROOKSVILLE - The Brooksville Woman's Club will host the following holiday events:

--Festival of Trees, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Dec. 2 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 3, St. Anthony Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd. This year's event is cosponsored by the church. Various organizations will have decorated trees to be judged. Vendors will be selling Christmas crafts, plants, baked goods and other items. Entertainment will include ministerial instrumental music by local church choirs. Food will be available for purchase. Vendor spaces are available for $30 for the two days. --Sixth annual Tour of Homes, Dec. 11, downtown Brooksville. There will be three tours: 1, 1:45 and 2:30 p.m. Three historic homes and the Brooksville Woman's Club clubhouse will be shown. Pancake breakfast, raffle will benefit local youths

SPRING HILL - The LaSertoma Club will host a pancake breakfast from 8 to 11 a.m. Dec. 11 at Guido's Restaurant at Forest Oaks Boulevard and Commercial Way.

Tickets are $3 and will include all-you-can-eat pancakes, sausage and beverages. Santa will visit with the children. Also, raffle tickets are available to win prizes such as a 27-inch TV or free pizza each month for one year.
