  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Side Trips

Coke or Pepsi

Compiled by JANET K. KEELER from wire reports
Published November 27, 2005

US Airways and America West executives are mulling which drinks to serve on the new US Airways: Coke or Pepsi, Budweiser or Miller.

Before the merger, passengers on America West could get a free Pepsi and pay $5 for a can of Budweiser. Aboard US Airways the choices were Coke, or $5 for a can of Miller.

US Airways spokesman Philip Gee said the airline plans to make its decision by the end of the year.

CLUB KID

The 10 best family resorts in the Caribbean, according to Child magazine, are:

- The Atlantis, Paradise Island, the Bahamas

- Almond Beach Village, St. Peter, Barbados

- Westin and Sheraton at Our Lucaya Beach & Golf Resort, Grand Bahama Island

- Four Seasons Resort, Nevis

- Holiday Inn, Sunspree Resort, Montego Bay, Jamaica

- Beaches Turks & Caicos Resort & Spa

- Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Jamaica

- Club Med Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

- Club Med Caravelle, Guadeloupe

- Breezes Curacao Resort

FLORIDA GOLF

Florida has its share of famous golf courses, but the November-December issue of Travel+Leisure Golf lists 10 lesser-known courses worth seeking out.

In alphabetical order, the magazine suggests teeing up at Abacoa Golf Club in Jupiter; the Club at Hidden Creek in Navarre; Crandon Park Golf Course in Key Biscayne; Dunes Golfers Club in Brooksville; El Diablo Golf and Country Club in Citrus Springs; Fernandina Beach Golf Club; the Golf Club at Fleming Island Plantation in Orange Park; Jacaranda Golf Club East in Plantation; Rock Springs Ridge Golf Club in Apopka; and Victoria Hills Golf Club in DeLand.

NEXT SOUTH BEACH?

Brickell Avenue in Miami's financial district, just a couple of blocks off Biscayne Bay, is already home to tony hotels such as the Four Seasons, the Mandarin Oriental and the year-old Conrad Miami. Now, another luxury property - the Viceroy - is scheduled to open there early next year. The 129-room Viceroy will feature a rooftop pool bar, as well as a spa.

WINTER OLYMPICS

In fewer than 100 days, Turin, Italy, will host the XX Winter Olympics, and the news is mixed. Tickets are available, but hotels are hard to come by for the Feb. 10-26 Games.

The sold-out events include the big-draw spectacles, such as gold-medal hockey and women's freestyle skating. Check the Torino the preferred Italian spelling Web site, www.torino2006.org for information on tickets and lodging.

Even if you're staying far from town, a car rental is not a good idea. Besides traffic, you will have to reserve (and pay for) parking near the venues, then hop a shuttle. Instead, rely on public transportation.

LIGHTEN UP

If you're planning on flying with gifts this holiday season, you may have to lighten up elsewhere. Many airlines restrict the weight of checked bags on international and domestic flights to 50 pounds per bag, maximum of two, with hefty charges for excesses.

Airlines usually don't enforce weight limits when it comes to carry-on bags. The limit is one bag per person plus a personal item such as a laptop, purse or small shoulder bag. Check www.tsa.gov for items allowed aboard.
