  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire took in $54.9-million over the three-day weekend to remain the top movie, while Walk the Line stayed in second place with $19.7-million, studios estimated Sunday.

Yours, Mine & Ours led new movies in the Friday-to-Sunday tally, finishing third with $17.5-million. Chicken Little was No. 4 with $12.4-million, Rent was fifth with $10.7-million and Just Friends was sixth with $9.3-million. Usher's In the Mix opened at No. 9 with $4.5-million, and The Ice Harvest debuted at No. 10 with $3.7-million.

The whole five-day Thanksgiving period turned out to be a healthy one for Hollywood: If estimates hold, it would be the second-highest gross ever for the five-day period at $218.3-million, just behind 2000's record $232.1-million.

Ex-rocker Glitter detained

Vietnam will detain former British glam rocker Gary Glitter while authorities complete investigations into a suspected child sex abuse case, a prosecutor said Friday. Glitter, 61, whose real name is Paul Francis Gadd, has been held in detention since Nov. 19.

He was stopped at Ho Chi Minh City's international airport as he was trying to leave the country amid allegations he had committed lewd acts with minors at his rented home in Vung Tau. Glitter, who has denied the allegations, has not been charged. His lawyer said he is still working on getting Glitter released on bail.

Crowe has fun with phone

Actor Russell Crowe, who pleaded guilty earlier this month to third-degree assault after admitting to a judge he threw a phone that hit a Manhattan concierge, is now willing to poke fun at himself.

While hosting Saturday night's Australian Film Industry Awards, he walked onstage carrying an old-fashioned, plastic phone.

"If there are any problems and you do get up here and go on too long," Crowe warned nominees, "Then "hello' to my little friend." Crowe was sentenced to a conditional discharge, which means he must not get arrested for one year.
