Fellowship Baptist repeats state crown

NEW PORT RICHEY - One year after becoming the first girls squad in the school's 20-plus year history to win a state title, the Fellowship Baptist Academy volleyball team repeated as state champions.

Returning all but two players from last season's squad, Fellowship Baptist defeated East Bay Christian 25-22, 25-20 on Nov. 18 in Haines City to win the Florida Christian Activities Association state tournament.

After an opening-round bye, Fellowship Baptist defeated Hillsborough Christian 17-25, 25-23, 16-14 to advance to the final. The Eagles beat Hillsborough Christian in last season's final.

Fellowship Baptist (5-5 overall, 4-0 conference) qualified for the eight-team, single-elimination tournament, which drew schools as far north as Floral City and as far south as Miami, by placing among the top two in the Northwest conference.

Fellowship Baptist libero Randi Groff, an eighth grader, was named tournament MVP. She had 14 digs and committed just four errors.

Brittany Clark (seven aces), Megan Mallas (two aces) and Crstin Magin served flawlessly for a Fellowship Baptist squad that had only one error in the championship match.

Mallas had eight kills, and Stephanie Escobar and Renee Milot added six apiece. Eighth grader Lexi Allen and senior Holly Bell handled the setting, and ninth grader Jill Krupp had three kills.

Theresa Curry, who played on last season's state championship squad, returned to help Wendy Boone coach.

"It was pretty much a team effort all the way around," Boone said.
