Call off cell phone telemarketers

By Times Staff Writer
Published November 29, 2005

Rumor has it that telemarketers are going to start calling cell phones, but at www.ftc.gov the Federal Trade Commission says, "You may have received an e-mail telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case.

"FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don't call consumers on their cell phones without their consent."

But if it makes you feel better, you can still register your cell phone number at www.donotcall.gov or by calling toll free 1-888-382-1222. The National Do Not Call Registry has accepted cell phone numbers since June 2003.
