Notebook: Fair helps farm workers with clothes, information

RUSKIN - About 700 farm workers and their families received donated blankets and clothes through the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office during a fair Nov. 19.

The brainchild of District 4 Maj. Jerry York, the fair was set up by the Sheriff's Office in the district headquarters parking lot off State Road 674 near Interstate 75.

Families lined up at dawn for the fair, which started at 8 a.m. and ran until 1 p.m. Children got their faces painted. Parents received educational brochures in Spanish on everything from identity theft to domestic violence. Music blared from loudspeakers.

York said he wanted to do something for the families he passes in his cruiser every day.

The Sheriff's Office also wants to build trust between its deputies and immigrant working families who might regard law enforcement with suspicion based on fear of deportation or bad experiences with police in other countries, York said.
