Trial delayed for 2nd man in drug-sex case

The Illinois man accused of helping Steven Lorenzo drug two Tampa men who were later raped and killed won't go to trial this month after all.

U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday has rescheduled Scott Schweickert's trial for Feb. 6 at Assistant U.S. Attorney Anthony Porcelli's request.

Porcelli said it would be premature to try Schweickert before Lorenzo's Jan. 27 sentencing.

A jury convicted Lorenzo, 46, on Nov. 10 of drugging nine men, two of whom later died, with the intent of harming them. He faces up to 200 years in prison, and Porcelli said he'll seek the maximum.

Porcelli wrote that there are "outstanding issues" regarding the Schweickert case that "may be resolved as a result of Lorenzo's sentencing."

Schweickert is charged with conspiracy and assisting in a drug-facilitated crime of violence against Michael Wachholtz and Jason Galehouse, both 26. Both men disappeared the same weekend in December 2003.
