Goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin said Friday morning he will not play tonight against the Lightning at the St. Pete Times Forum, the first time he could have faced the team he helped bring the 2003-04 Stanley Cup.
Khabibulin, who signed a free-agent contract with the Blackhawks, said he told coach Trent Yawney that given the distractions and emotions of the day (he finally received his Cup ring), he could not be as focused as he needs to play.
"I said it would be difficult to concentrate, probably," said Khabibulin, who with a $6.75-million salary is the NHL's highest-paid goalie. "I don't think I have much to prove in this building. I think I've done pretty well here. Just come to the game and enjoy it, look in the stands and see what's going on."
