Speakers will talk about mental illness

NAMI (the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) of Pasco County will present two special education programs at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Quality Inn, 5316 U.S. 19, New Port Richey.

"Strategies for Coping with Mental Illness" will be presented by Stanley Giannet, who holds a doctorate in clinical psychology. Giannet is dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Pasco-Hernando Community College and affiliate assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral medicine at the University of South Florida. His program is designed for mental health care consumers and their families and friends.

An overview of crisis intervention training, which teaches police officers how to respond to psychiatric crises, will be presented by Pasco County Sheriff's Department Crisis Intervention Specialist Cpl. Cliff Blum and The Harbor Behavioral Health Care Institute community resources manager Maryann Senderling. The program is designed for the family members of those with severe mental illness.

Meetings

Retired counselor Gene Braden will lead a discussion on Medicare Part D at a Caregivers Support Group meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Aging Assistance, 5647 Pine St., New Port Richey. Participants are asked to bring a list of their medications and questions. The program is free. To reserve a spot, call Sandra Howard at (727) 847-1857.

The Sons of the American Legion Squadron 79 will have its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at American Legion Paradise Post 79, 5329 Legion Place, New Port Richey. Call (727) 842-9410.

The Hudson Opera Club will show a video of the 1943 version of Phantom of the Opera with Claude Rains at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hudson Regional Library, 8012 Library Road. Admission is free. Call (727) 697-0117.
