Circuit Judge George Greer made more than a few enemies for his decisions in the Terri Schiavo case. But he won a lot of fans, too, and this week his work will be honored by the Pinellas County chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Greer will receive the Gardner W. Beckett Jr. Civil Liberties Award. The chapter also will present the Irene Miller Vigilance in Journalism Award to Tampa Tribune columnist Daniel Ruth.

The two will be honored Thursday at a banquet at the Feather Sound Country Club, 2201 Feather Sound Drive. Tickets are $30 and available through Dec. 6. To make reservations, call 727 822-9290, or e-mail think@ij.net Beckett, who died in 1993, was known for taking on civil liberties cases, and often succeeding.
