Health agency honored for its diabetes program

The Hernando County Health Department was recently awarded the American Diabetes Association Education Recognition Certificate for its diabetes self-management education program.

The ADA recognition assures that the agency meets the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education Programs. The Health Department's program is the only program of this type in the area to have received this recognition.

Holiday tea to feature live music, Christmas raffle

BROOKSVILLE - The St. Anthony Columbiettes will host a holiday tea from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 20428 Cortez Blvd.

Entertainment will be provided by We Love to Sing. The event will include lunch, dessert and tea. There will be door prizes and a raffle for Christmas baskets.

Silvertones headliners at Dec. 17 dinner show

SPRING HILL - The Forest Oaks Women's Guild will host a dinner show featuring the Silvertones on Dec. 17 at the church, 8555 Forest Oaks Blvd. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m., followed by the concert.

Polish Legion sets annual Christmas fest for Sunday

SPRING HILL - The Polish Legion of American Veterans and Ladies Auxiliary, Walter Weiss Memorial Post 196, will host its annual Oplatki Christmas Celebration on Sunday at the Deerfield community clubhouse on Candy Drive, just north of Spring Hill Drive.

Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. A traditional Polish dinner will be served at 2:30 p.m. Live Polish and American dance music will be provided by the Bee Sharps from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. Those arriving early for the cocktail hour should bring their own beverages and snacks.

There will be a communal tree decoration, singing of Polish and American Christmas carols, a visit by St. Nick and the sharing of the Oplatek (Christmas wafer)..

Events bring holiday spirit to downtown Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE - These holiday events will take place Saturday in downtown Brooksville:

--Christmas Parade, 10 a.m. to noon. The parade will start on Oakwood Drive (behind Hernando High School) and travel down Howell Avenue to Fort Dade Avenue. The parade is sponsored by the Brooksville Kiwanis Club and the city of Brooksville. The theme will be Christmas 2005: Home for the Holidays in Hernando County.

Parade participants include youth organizations, churches, businesses, clubs, high school marching bands, dignitaries, emergency equipment, horses, Shriners and more. Parade float applications are available online at the Brooksville Kiwanis Web site at www.brooksvillekiwanis.org or call Karen or Julie at 544-5407.

--Christmas Festival, noon to 3 p.m. The festival is sponsored by the city of Brooksville and will be in the parking lot behind City Hall, 201 Howell Ave., after the parade. There will be pictures with Santa Claus, games, food, entertainment, hayrides and arts and craft vendors. The art gallery at City Hall will be open for tours. Call 544-5407 for details.

--Band Shell Bash and Cruise-In, 4 to 8 p.m., Hernando Park, 205 E Fort Dade Ave. This is a free outdoor concert that includes a car and motorcycle cruise-in and food vendors. The concert will feature Chase Vaccarro, nationally known as the "Crooner at Large." The opening act will be local entertainers Carla Becker, Susan Falcone, Louie Fortunato and Mickey D. Visitors who bring an unwrapped toy will receive a free raffle ticket. The bash is cosponsored by the Hernando County Fine Arts Council and the Band Shell Bash Committee. --Brooksville Christmas Tour of Yesteryear, 6 to 9 p.m., May-Stringer Heritage Museum, 601 Museum Court, off Saxon Avenue. Candlelight tours will be given. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. For information, call 799-0129.

Public invited to YMCA's breakfast with Santa

SPRING HILL - The Hernando County Family YMCA's Family and Teen Department will host a breakfast with Santa from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the YMCA, 1300 Mariner Blvd.

The event is open to the community. The cost is $2 per person, which includes a continental breakfast. Pictures with Santa will be available for $10. Additional photos are $5 each.

Reservations are required by Thursday. RSVP to Amber, 688-9622.

Proceeds will benefit the annual giving scholarship program that provides financial assistance to qualifying individuals and families for YMCA membership.
