Developer's new plan cuts impact on wetlands

LECANTO - A new proposal from RealtiCorp for a 212-acre development along U.S. 19 features a "significantly reduced" impact on area wetlands, director of Development Services Gary Maidhof said Wednesday.

Maidhof met with RealtiCorp officials for about an hour Wednesday morning to discuss the revisions. Maidhof said the developer likely will submit plans to the county for formal review in the next 30 days.

He said connected wetlands at U.S. 19 and Venable Street will not be affected. The Southwest Florida Water Management District's staff has recommended that RealtiCorp receive an environmental resource permit for the site along U.S. 19 about a quarter-mile south of the Crystal River Airport.

The Swiftmud permit would allow an impact on nearly 15 acres of wetlands. To make up for that, the developer said it would create 4 acres of wetlands on the property and donate 127 acres of wetlands and 62 acres of upland to the state to be part of Crystal River State Buffer Preserve.

In August, the County Commission asked Swiftmud's governing board to table its discussion of the proposal until county staffers could review it more closely. Since then, RealtiCorp officials have had several meetings with county staffers.
