Re: Slow start, big hopes, Nov. 19 Times.
The Southwest Florida Water Management District's Water Conservation Hotel and Motel Program, or CHAMP, promotes water conservation through a "linens and towels reuse program," which means the management agrees to launder linens every third day of a guest's stay unless the guest requests otherwise.
The district program started in Pinellas County and has now spread throughout our 16-county jurisdiction. The program was introduced in Hernando and Citrus counties last year and we now have 20 percent participation from area hotels and motels. We are quite pleased with this start, especially considering the lack of a central vehicle like a hotel-motel association to help promote the program.
A recent article mistakenly listed Niagara Conservation as a supporter or partner in the program, and did not give credit to all of the actual supporting partners. Water CHAMP in Hernando and Citrus is supported by Progress Energy, Citrus 20/20, Citrus County Solid Waste Management and Hernando County Utilities.
The Green Lodging Program was created by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, not Progress Energy. Water CHAMP is a technical partner to the Green Lodging Program.
Finally, there are no current plans for "free or low-cost (water) audits" of participating properties.

Bill Fanning's letter on Nov. 27 expressed his disapproval of the DUI license plate that state Sen. Mike Fasano proposed. Fanning says he's not voting for Mike.
I suppose now there will be new plates with "DVF" on them: (Didn't Vote Fasano).
I just received another anonymous phone call with a twisted and unethical message trying to destroy the credibility of U.S. Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite.
The person criticized her for voting for the government to use some of its huge oil storage to help during the recent oil shortage due to the hurricanes. This supplied much-needed oil and started the lowering of pump prices and has saved us all a lot of money.
We are most fortunate to have Ginny for our representative. She recently sent a letter revealing the United Nations' attempt to take over the Internet. She is a co-sponsor of a House resolution that would block the U.N. takeover.
I think people should call and thank Ginny for helping to lower gas prices and helping to keep the Internet in the United States.
I would like to thank our dystopian U.S. representative, Ginny Brown-Waite, for her commitment to reducing the deficit. Yes, Ms. Brown-Waite's vote on HR 560 - a budget reconciliation provision - cuts $50-billion from the federal budget over the next five years.
Does this "reconciliation" go after no-bid contracts? No. Does she seek to reduce government waste? No. Does she ask that the president's tax cuts "sunrise" so that we may once again fill our nation's coffers to help pay for the war in Iraq? No.
Rep. Brown-Waite is ensuring that 222,000 people lose food stamps. She will cut $900-million from health care programs that include rural programs where people have no access to health care. Some $8-billion has been slashed from funding prevention of a bird flu pandemic. And, of course, Brown-Waite and her colleagues have gouged the usual programs: child care programs, agricultural subsidies for farmers, etc.
What does this mean to Joe Public? Well, after our country potentially looks like the New Orleans Superdome after bird flu strikes; after almost a quarter of a million people go hungry overnight; after more American farmers lose their farms to cheaper-producing South American farmers; if you have a household with a median income of $50,000 per year, you get to save a whole $50.
Once again, Brown-Waite has toed the line for the Washington conservative elite. She has falsely vilified the poor as the drain on our society while cronyism, corruption and greed go unchecked.
I find it reprehensible that Congress is filled with so many people taking tax dollars to pay their salaries. Yet, instead of taking on the real economic excesses of Washington, they go after those who have the weakest lobbying voice.
There is nothing "compassionate" nor "conservative" about HR 560 and Brown-Waite should be ashamed for voting for it.
