Coach Richard Slack's Panthers entered the season with high hopes.
Though the 0-2 squad is improving, tough losses to Nature Coast Tech and Ocala Forest and a sixth-place finish in the eight-team Colt Invitational Tournament at North Marion have dug Lecanto into a quick hole. But Slack said the squad will rebound from the slow start. With returning seniors such as state qualifier Dustin Whitelaw leading the Panthers in the 160-pound class, the younger, less-experienced wrestlers have an example to follow. Returnees Robert Ebaugh (125) and Josh Velez (140) are hoping to help Lecanto be successful down the stretch.
The Panthers play host to Dunnellon on Wednesday.
PIRATES START SEASON: While most schools have a few matches under their belts, Crystal River has waited in the wings for its shot.
With the loss of Seth Metz, a fourth-place state finisher last year who transferred to Springstead, the Pirates will look for leadership from senior Joe Bertine in the 145-pound division.
Coach Craig Frederick and his wrestlers are excited to have their opening match on Wednesday at home.
It will be a tune-up for Crystal River's first tough tournament of the season - the annual Kiwanis event at Hernando on Saturday.
'CANES SET FOR TOURNEY: Coach Rob Hermann and his Citrus athletes are preparing this week for the Kiwanis Tournament. After a runner-up finish in the eight-team Colt Invitational at North Marion, the Hurricanes are expected to be led by two seniors and a successful sophomore.
Seniors Mike Musto (152) and Josh Walters (171), along with sophomore Bryant Fisher (112), have dominated so far.
The Kiwanis competition will be a tough test for Citrus (5-1), which may be without 160-pounder Jeremy Phillips. The junior sustained a shoulder injury, and his status is uncertain.
