Coach Doug Patton is enjoying an increase in the number of participants at Citrus.
This not only has the school excited about the prospects of the season, but the future of the sport at Citrus.
The Hurricanes open their schedule Wednesday in a home meet against Hernando, a target Patton has used to motivate his young team.
The coach is especially high on three returnees whom he hopes will help mentor Citrus' many freshmen.
Seniors Jen Wilburn (119) and Kayla Losciale (183) were key contributors last season and likely will anchor the line-up in 2005-06. Junior returnee Brooke Mundy (101) is another key lifter who Patton is relying on for help.
PIRATES' YOUTH: Crystal River coach Charles Brooks thinks his squad has a great deal of potential.
Brianna Driver was last season's team leader, finishing third at state in the unlimited weight class. After losing her to graduation, Brooks returns three members - all juniors. He thinks these lifters are more than capable of qualifying for state competition.
Jackie Seffern (129), Quincy Wilson (183) and Kari Stanford (199) return with the most experience. Since each has a year left after this season, the future looks bright for the Pirates. Crystal River starts Wednesday at Lecanto. The Pirates will be at Westport next Wednesday.
ENOUGH TO GO AROUND: According to coach Bob LeCours, Lecanto can make some waves this season thanks to an influx of depth to go along with three returning state qualifiers.
Led by Jen Corriveau (110), Shaneatha Gates (199) and Kim Hargis (139), the Panthers have the leadership and roster to continue on the budding program's path.
Corriveau is weighing in at 110 after ending last season's run at 13th in the state in the 101 division. LeCours thinks she will move back to 101 before the season is over. And with Corriveau's improved strength, the ceiling on her potential is pretty high.
Wednesday's season-opening meet at home against county rival Crystal River should be a barometer for where the team stands. LeCours is confident in the Panthers' outlook despite losing some of last year's best seniors.
