SPRING HILL - In just five years the Spring Hill Community Association's annual Angels On High outdoor holiday decoration exhibit has grown well beyond what the residents of the community surrounding Hunters Lake ever imagined.
Every year hundreds of Hernando residents make the trek to the 5-acre plot of woods next to the association's clubhouse to see the colorful display of handcrafted angels that hang from the trees. Folks will then drift over to the clubhouse for a little hot cocoa and to listen to a little holiday music from local entertainers, while kids make their acquaintance with Santa.
"It's just a friendly get-together we like to do every year for our friends and neighbors," said Spring Hill Community Association treasurer Cookie Morales. "It brings joy to a lot of people."
Morales said this year's lighted celebration, which runs from Dec. 10 to 17, has gotten a little extra unexpected press via the American Automobile Association, which listed Angels On High in its monthly guidebook. Morales, who answers the phone at the association's headquarters, said she has been getting inquiries all week from people wanting to visit the display.
"I had some from as far away as Miami," said Morales. "So we decided we needed to clear a little more room for parking, just in case."
Approximately 50 angels will make up the community display, which is a little less than in previous years. Morales said some key organizers of the event had been ill recently and were unable to participate in the event to the extent they did in the past.
"Without that help it's been a little harder," offered Morales. "We're looking to attract some new volunteers who will want to jump in and give us a hand."
