Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

If you aren't already in the mood for the holidays, then maybe the Hernando County Christmas Parade and other events going on in downtown Brooksville on Saturday will put some jingle into your seasonal spirit.

CHRISTMAS PARADE: Things will kick off at 10 a.m. with the 31st annual Hernando County Christmas Parade, sponsored by the Brooksville Kiwanis Club in association with the city.

The theme for this year's event is "Home for the Holidays in Hernando County." Approximately 125 entries are expected for the parade, which will depart at Oakwood Street behind Hernando High School and proceed south down Howell Avenue to City Hall.

"The Christmas parade is always a special source of pride to our community," said Brooksville City Clerk Karen Phillips. "It's a lot of fun for everyone, whether they're participating or just watching."

Longtime Hernando County resident Neil Law Jr. will serve as grand marshal of the parade and 9-year-old Joseph McClellan Jr. will be honored as "Hometown Hero" for raising funds for victims of Hurricane Katrina.

CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL: The celebration will continue from noon to 3 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot with the Brooksville Christmas Festival. The free event will include music and entertainment, kids activities and games, plus a host of vendors selling homemade crafts, candies, dolls, jewelry, ornaments and more. Children will have an opportunity to visit with Santa.

BAND SHELL BASH: At 4 p.m. the focus will shift to the Hernando park band shell for the Hernando County Fine Arts Council's free monthly Band Shell Bash concert series. Nationally known "crooner" Chase Vaccarro will present a concert of pop standards and Christmas classics, along with Hernando quartet Absolutely Fabulous! (Carla Becker, Susan Falcone, Louie Fortunato and Mickey D). In addition to music, the event will feature the Brooksville Cruise-In classic car show, food and vendors, plus a gift raffle. Those who bring an unwrapped toy for charity will receive a free raffle ticket.

CHRISTMAS TOUR: Finally, those looking to see how Christmas was celebrated in Brooksville during Victorian times should consider a visit Saturday to the May-Stringer Heritage Museum, 601 Museum Court. From 6 to 10 p.m. the 12-room house will celebrate its annual "Christmas Tour of Yesteryear" by being fully illuminated inside by candlelight. Tours will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. The museum is located at 601 Museum Court, off Saxon Avenue. Admission is $3 for adults and $1 for children. For information, call the museum at 799-0129.
