An American Airlines plane bound for Tampa Thursday night was diverted back to New York City after smoke appeared in the cabin.
Flight 543, which left New York's LaGuardia Airport at 6:33 p.m., landed safely an hour later at JFK International Airport. None of the passengers was hurt. Among the passengers were Paul Tash, editor, CEO and chairman of the St. Petersburg Times, and former Tampa Bay Devil Rays managing general partner Vince Naimoli.
Firetrucks lined the runway when the plane landed. Emergency workers examined the plane for visible fires or unusual hot spots. Five to 10 minutes later, the plane pulled up to the terminal and the passengers unloaded, Tash said.
The smell of smoke was in the cabin but it was not particularly hazy, Tash said.
A flight attendant told the passengers to stay calm but did not explain what had gone wrong, Tash said.
